Developed by Dr. George Roth, DC, ND in the early 1990's, Matrix Repatterning represents the culmination of 30 years of research into the structural basis of health. It is a new way of understanding, objectively assessing and gently restoring balance within the body. It is a clinically-proven form of manual therapy based on sound scientific principles, used around the world by many health-care professionals. Matrix Repatterning restores structural balance, eliminates pain and improves overall health by resolving the problem at the source - literally at the cellular and molecular levels. Matrix Repatterning is based on the tensegrity structural model. Tensegrity (pronounced like "integrity") is a term coined by the famous architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller, to describe interconnected tension and compression elements found in structures such as a geodesic dome (and living tissues).
Research has shown that every cell of the body is linked to every other cell by a continuous fabric of molecular strands (extracellular matrix, cytoskeleton), referred to as the Tensegrity Matrix. The matrix is a strong and flexible framework, which appears to function as an intercellular internet, directing mechanical, chemical and electrical signals essential for optimal cellular health. Disruption of this communication system appears to be a factor in many health conditions.
Injuries, such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, sprains/strains and sports injuries are primarily absorbed by the dense core structures of the body, such as the internal organs, and the dense crystalline structure of bone. The molecular structure of the matrix responds to injury with the creation of a focal area of tension, referred to as a primary restriction. Dense bone is frequently affected, while joints, muscles and ligaments (often the location of symptoms) are designed to give way with excessive force. Spinal joints may be internally stressed as a means of accommodating the strain imposed by the primary restrictions in order to protect the spinal cord. Restricted areas may be painless, but are usually very tender to the touch. Strain patterns result in a complex, interconnecting network of abnormal tension, which may lead to many painful and imbalanced conditions throughout the body. The structures affected by primary restrictions will send inaccurate information into the cellular communication system, resulting in pain and diverse health problems in unsuspected areas of the body.
Since all of the cells of the body are interconnected by the matrix, a primary restriction in one part of the body can cause symptoms of strain and pain in many other areas. These symptomatic areas are usually blamed for the condition and are typically the focus of other forms of treatment. Treating the area of pain alone may provide short-term relief, but if the source of the injury within the core structures is not identified or addressed, the condition will tend to return or become more easily re-injured.
Matrix Repatterning enables the location of primary restrictions at the source of the problem due to an electronic change in the cell structure which accompanies the injury. The process involves a subtle palpation that senses changes in compression or tension when areas with a primary restriction are pressed. Bone in particular contains hydroxyapatite crystals which respond to mechanical forces via the piezoelectric effect. By collecting and releasing electrons, the dense structures of the body communicate to the matrix the status of internal homeostasis. Once this status is identified, treatment using gentle manual pressure is used to encourage a return to a normal state of tone. Since the cells retain the 'memory' of the normal structure, precise coaxing is sufficient for these structures to be repatterned. By systematically releasing layers of injury which have accumulated over time, Matrix Repatterning can allow the entire body to be repatterned, and restored to optimal pain-free function. These layers are released in a series of treatments at a pace directed by the innate intelligence of the body.
Since long-term imbalances are often being corrected, the body may respond for a period of several days after each treatment. The most common response is a reduction of symptoms, however a temporary aggravation of symptoms may also occur. This is known as "retracing" and has been discussed in the Q and A section.
